Denmark’s SUNKEN plays atmospheric black metal that is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking, and with their latest album they have taken one of the most remarkable steps in Danish metal in years. The sound draws inspiration from the sea and Danish nature, with blast beats and layer upon layer of riffs that suddenly open up into quiet, melodic passages.

Their 2017 debut Departure established SUNKEN as a powerhouse of Danish atmospheric black metal, and with Livslede in 2020 came their international breakthrough, with an album about anxiety, self-loathing and hopelessness.

After a five-year break, the band returned in October 2025 with the album Lykke (“Happiness”): four long tracks totalling 50 minutes, where orchestral layers, choirs and mournful strings meet the raw and intense. Titles such as Og det er lykke (“And that is happiness”) and Når livet går på hæld (“When life draws to a close”) say something about the direction. You can expect metal with heart that will both sweep you away and leave you thinking.
